OPERATION HALAUZA

Everton Halauza served his country with honor. As a United States Army veteran, he deployed to Iraq and carried the weight of that service long after returning home. Though he was honorably discharged, the lasting effects of his military service followed him for the rest of his life. Everton ultimately passed away due to service-connected disabilities, leaving behind a grieving mother, Neiva Halauza, and a legacy of sacrifice.

In the years following her son’s passing, Neiva faced a battle of her own. Beginning in 2017, the Department of Veterans Affairs repeatedly mismanaged the benefits Everton had rightfully earned through his honorable service. Each delay and error compounded the pain of her loss, turning grief into exhaustion and frustration. Navigating the VA system alone felt overwhelming, especially while carrying the unimaginable weight of losing a child.

In 2026, Neiva reached out for help through the Gold Star Mission, requesting assistance from Veterans Rebuilding Life (VRL). She was seeking not only clarity and resolution, but someone who would stand beside her and advocate on her behalf.

VRL responded immediately. Their team provided personalized VA benefits counseling, guiding Neiva through the complex claims process and helping her understand the benefits her son’s service had secured. Just as importantly, VRL helped Neiva register with the American Gold Star Mothers Association, connecting her with a community uniquely bonded by shared loss—mothers who understand the depth of grief that comes from losing a child in service to the nation.

Through advocacy, support, and connection, Neiva Halauza no longer had to navigate her journey alone. Her story is a powerful reminder that behind every veteran’s service is a family who also serves—and that honoring their sacrifice means standing with them long after the uniform is hung up.
