VRL Veteran Mission
Mario Hernandez was born in Queens, NY. He enlisted in the Army and served as a combat engineer, one of the most dangerous roles in the military, responsible for locating and destroying enemy improvised explosive devices (IEDs). In 2007, Mario deployed to Iraq with the 15th Infantry Regiment. The unit was actively engaged by enemy forces, and suffered heavy losses.
Years later, Mario was still carrying the weight of that service. In March 2025, he came to VRL for help. After a suicide attempt the previous year, he had been prescribed medication by the VA but lacked the ongoing support he needed. He was isolated, struggling with daily life, and had been underemployed for nearly a year.

VRL responded quickly, enrolling Mario in long-term Cognitive Processing Therapy with a local provider while he continued medication management through the VA. He also participated in VRL’s Annual Wilderness Weekend, where he connected with other veterans, built survival skills, and completed a challenging hike on the Appalachian Trail. The experience helped him rediscover purpose and strength.
Next, VRL helped Mario apply for the VA’s Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR/E) program and supported his successful application to LaGuardia Community College, where he’s now pursuing an Associate’s degree in Business Management.
Today, Mario is thriving—and giving back. He begins volunteering this summer with VRL’s Creative Arts program, helping other veterans find healing through artistic expression.
