Doctors review Othman's medical report, prior to the child patient's open heart surgery.

Othman Mihaidi Salih was born with a congenital heart defect known as Left Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction (LVOTO). This condition restricts blood flow from the left ventricle of the heart into the aorta, which can cause heart failure. LVOTO is often detected before birth and quickly treated. In Iraq however, decades of war have weakened the nation’s infrastructure, putting children at-risk of heart failure.

This was the case with Othman. Without a proper diagnosis at birth his condition progressed to a dangerous level. The obstruction increases strain on his heart, putting him at-risk of lventricular enlargement, arrhythmia, and heart failure. Othman’s family cannot afford the open-heart surgery necessary to remove the obstruction and stabilize his heart.

Othman’s case was brought to VRL’s partners who understood the urgency of his condition. VRL agreed to support the mission, successfully raising the $2,500.00 required to complete the heart surgery. Thanks to your support, Othman has access to life-saving care.
