OPERATION SWAHN

Tim Patrick Swahn was born and raised in the state of New Jersey. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Lee, Virginia, where he served as a Unit Supply Specialist. Within just months of entering military service, Tim was activated for an combat deployment to Iraq.

Like many soldiers, Tim soon discovered that military training alone cannot fully prepare one for the realities of war. Although his Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) focused on supply operations, his duties in Iraq were very different. Upon arrival, Tim was reassigned to serve as a Military Police officer (MP) with the Army’s 320th Military Police Detachment.

Despite having no prior MP training, Tim quickly adapted to his new responsibilities and became an effective and reliable member of his unit. His dedication and performance during deployment earned him several citations and awards, including the Army Commendation Medal.

Tim survived multiple IED blasts during convoy operations in Iraq. In the most significant incident, his vehicle was struck while he was standing alongside it. The explosion tore the steel passenger door from the truck and hurled it into Tim, causing severe head trauma. Following his injuries, Tim received home-based care through the VA’s Caregiver Program. While this support addressed his physical needs, he struggled to manage his finances, appointments, and other responsibilities outside of in-home medical care. The program did not fully address his mental health or social support needs.

To ensure more comprehensive care, I referred Tim to the New Jersey VA’s Post-9/11 Military2VA (M2VA) case management program. However, he experienced significant delays in response times and scheduling. I followed up on the referral and actively advocated on his behalf. As a result, the Post-9/11 team responded promptly and is now coordinating additional home-based care services to better support his overall well-being. In addition, I referred Tim to the VA Coordinated Assistance Network for financial counseling. This support will help him address his debt and work toward building a stable and secure foundation for the future.
