OPERATION GONZALEZ

Javier Gonzalez is an honorably discharged Army veteran who served in the Afghanistan War. Like many veterans, the transition from military service to civilian life came with challenges. Some visible, others deeply personal. By April of 2025, those challenges had reached a breaking point.

Facing severe mental health symptoms without treatment, Javier found himself on the brink of losing his home. His landlord had refused to renew his lease, and eviction loomed. At the same time, Javier was navigating a recent separation from his wife and struggling to co-parent their two children. Between housing instability, employment concerns, and the weight of caring for his family, Javier needed support.

That’s when he reached out to Veterans Rebuilding Life. VRL volunteers immediately stepped in to stabilize the situation. The first priority was ensuring Javier’s access to mental health treatment. VRL successfully registered Javier to begin receiving ongoing mental health services through the VA, an essential foundation for stability.

VRL connected Javier and his spouse with counseling services, to help them establish healthier communication and create a co-parenting plan focused on the well-being of their children. Additionally the two enrolled in parenting classes, tailored for children with special needs, all at no-cost.

Housing stability was another concern. VRL referred Javier to a local realtor who could assist with housing transition options, while also connecting the family to pro bono legal services to address ongoing issues with the landlord. To ensure Javier could continue working during this transition, VRL covered the cost of his past-due car insurance bills, made possible through funding from the Cigna Grant. VRL submitted a disability claim with the VA on Javier’s behalf, and continues to provide vocational rehabilitation check-ins, with plans to assist him with employment placement upon graduation.

Beyond crisis intervention, VRL also created space for healing and connection. Javier and his family attended Creative Arts Workshops, offering a healthy environment to reconnect outside of the stress of home and traditional therapeutic settings. During the holiday season, VRL provided funds for clothing and Christmas presents for the two children, ensuring they felt supported and cared for during a time that can be especially difficult for families in transition.

Today, Javier is no longer struggling. Veterans Rebuilding Life continues to monitor his progress, while providing ongoing support for both Javier, and his family.
