In May of 2025, Alonso Mills reached out to Veterans Rebuilding Life seeking help. A proud veteran, Mr. Mills had been struggling for years to receive the benefits he rightfully deserved for a debilitating back injury sustained during service, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite clear evidence documented in his service treatment records and medical evaluations, the Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) had repeatedly denied his disability claim. Exhausted but determined, Alonso turned to Veterans Rebuilding Life for support.

“The staff at Veterans Rebuilding Life is excellent. They filed my disability with great success. I am indebted to them for life. Thank you guys.”

He was quickly connected with two of our dedicated volunteer Veteran Service Officers, Susan Dachs and Damia December. From their first conversation, Susan and Damia made it clear that Mr. Mills would not have to face this fight alone.

Susan took the lead in dissecting the VA’s repeated denials. With tenacity and care, she resubmitted key medical evidence, crafted detailed written arguments, and guided Mr. Mills through every step of the appeals process. Recognizing the strength of his case, she escalated the claim through a Higher-Level Review.

Thanks to this outcome, Mr. Mills can now access the healthcare he urgently needs—and support himself financially with dignity and peace of mind. His journey is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when veterans stand together. At Veterans Rebuilding Life, we remain committed to ensuring that no veteran is left to fight their battles alone.
