OPERATION SAMERA

2024 Medical Mission
Erbil, Iraq

Operation Samera's patient seen resting, post surgery, alongside Ayad of Iraqi Institute for Development, a nonprofit partner.

Samera, a wife and mother, found herself in a challenging situation.

Samera resides in Erbil, a community known for its generosity in accommodating over 5 million displaced Iraqis, and an additional 300,000 Syrian refugees, during the peak of the ISIS conflict.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Erbil is now under severe economic strain, due to the overwhelming refugee population.

Samera faced the risk of losing her vision in her right eye, due to a hemorrhage known as hyphema. Left untreated, her condition would result in permanent damage to her cornea, and required a surgical procedure that her impoverished family could not afford.

Veterans Rebuilding Life volunteers successfully raised the total cost of the medical operation. Samera has made a complete recovery, bringing immense relief to her husband and young children.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our tireless medical team in Iraq, supporting donors from the Assyrian migrant community of California, and our steadfast veteran supporters from across the United States, for their unwavering support.
