OPERATION AYHAM
2025 Child Medical Mission

Ayham hid his hands from view when he first entered to the Doctor’s office.
Three-year-old Ayham Khairallah Mohammed was born with congenital hand deformities that significantly affected his quality of life. Upon examination, attending physicians diagnosed Ayham with Bilateral Syndactyly a condition in which two or more fingers are fused together due to incomplete separation during fetal development.
In Ayham’s case, the condition affected the fifth digits (pinky fingers) of both hands. If left untreated, Syndactyly leads to progressive fibrosis, restricting a child’s ability to perform fine motor tasks, or engage in developmental activities.
Following a medical review, the surgical team determined that Ayham required two staged reconstructive surgeries, one for each hand. The goal of each procedure was to separate the fused digits while preserving neuromuscular integrity, tendon function, and skin coverage. Each surgery involved release of the fused tissue, reshaping and grafting of the digits, followed by postoperative care to prevent infection and scarring.
The cost for each procedure (including hospital care, surgical supplies, and postoperative treatment) came to $1,240 per hand, for a total of $2,480. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors, Veterans Rebuilding Life was able to fully fund Ayham’s medical care.
Ayham’s first surgery, performed on his right hand on January, 2025 was a complete success. Healing progressed without complications, and he regained normal movement in his fingers. His second procedure, completed on May 2025, addressed the deformity in his left hand and also resulted in success. Doctors expect Ayham to make a full functional recovery, with no lasting limitations in either hand.
