Calverton National Cemetery, Long Island, NY

United States Marine and Vietnam Veteran Frank Steimer's journey began in Flatbush, Brooklyn in New York City, where he spent his formative years. Fresh out of high school, at the age of nineteen, Frank enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.

His path led him through four months of basic training in Paris Island, North Carolina, where his potential was quickly recognized. Frank was selected for service in military intelligence and found himself at the Defense Language Institute (DLI) in Washington, DC. Frank immersed himself in the intricacies of the Vietnamese language and way of life, all in preparation for his upcoming deployment to Vietnam in 1967.

Frank’s swiftly mastered Vietnamese, emerging as a fluent speaker within months. He was then directed to Fort Holabird, Maryland, to undergo intensive interrogation training through the Military Intelligence Corps. Upon completing this rigorous program, Frank was designated with the military occupation specialty of 0251: Enlisted Language Interpreter.

The details of Frank’s time in service in Vietnam remain sparse. Like many returning veterans, he seldom spoke of his experiences in combat. His official military records however, paint a picture of bravery and honor.

Frank was awarded the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation (seen above) by the Government of the Republic of Vietnam, in recognition of his unit’s extraordinary valor and heroic actions in the face of enemy forces. Additionally, he received the Vietnam Campaign and Service Medals, adorned with three Campaign Stars.

In March 4th 2024, Corporal Frank Steimer passed away suddenly at the age of 76. He was laid to rest alongside his brothers-in-arms at Calverton National Cemetery in Long Island, NY. During his memorial ceremony, a Marine Honor Guard paid tribute to his service, presenting his surviving family members with a folded American flag—a poignant symbol of a grateful nation’s appreciation for his dedication and sacrifice.
